In our Australian climate—especially in regions like the Mid North Coast and New England—humidity is the natural enemy of magnetic tape. If you’ve opened a box of old VHS or 8mm tapes and noticed a white, fuzzy, or powdery substance inside the clear windows, you are looking at mould.

Many people ask, “Can I still save my memories?” The answer is almost always yes, but it requires immediate professional intervention.

Why Mould is Dangerous

Mould isn’t just a cosmetic issue; it’s a physical threat to your family history:

  1. The “Glue” Effect: Mould feeds on the organic binders in the tape. It effectively “glues” the layers of the tape together. If you try to play a mouldy tape, the VCR will rip the magnetic coating right off the plastic backing, destroying the image forever.
  2. Contamination: If you put a mouldy tape into your VCR, the spores will spread to the internal drum and heads. Every tape you play after that will become cross-contaminated.
  3. Health Risks: Disturbing old fungal spores by running them through a high-speed machine can release them into the air of your home.

Do Not Play a Mouldy Tape!

If you see white spots, stop. Do not “test” the tape to see if it still works. Every second a moldy tape spins in an uncleaned player, it is being physically shredded.

Our Professional Cleaning & Restoration Process

At Digital Media Now, we have a dedicated protocol for handling “sick” tapes. We use specialized equipment to ensure the tape is safe to play before the digitization process begins.

  • Specialized Cleaning Stations: We use a custom-engineered cleaning machine that runs the tape through a series of non-abrasive wipers and specialized cleaning agents. This process physically removes the mould spores and debris from the surface of the tape.
  • Teranex Signal Restoration: Mould often leaves behind tiny “pockmarks” or damage on the magnetic surface that can cause the image to flicker or lose sync. Once the tape is clean, we feed the signal through our Blackmagic Teranex Standards Converter. The Teranex performs thousands of calculations per second to stabilize the “jitter” and smooth out the signal loss caused by the fungal damage.

What About Dust and Dirt?

Even if there is no mould, 30 years of dust can act like sandpaper on a video head. We inspect every tape that comes into our South Tamworth studio. If a tape is excessively dirty, we run it through our cleaning system before it ever touches our professional playback decks. This protects your film and our equipment, ensuring the clearest possible digital transfer.

Can all mouldy tapes be saved?

While we have a very high success rate, the sooner you act, the better. If the mould has “eaten” too deep into the magnetic layers and caused the tape to become brittle, the damage can become permanent.

If you’ve discovered mould on your tapes, don’t throw them away, and don’t try to clean them with a cloth at home. Place them in a sealed Ziploc bag and bring them to us. We’ll give you a professional assessment and help you rescue those memories before they’re gone for good.
